To ensure that the future Decentralised Digital Twin Environment (DDTE) reflects the needs and expectations of its users, the DTRIP4H consortium is organising a series of online co-creation workshops bringing together stakeholders from across healthcare, research, policy, technology, and society. These workshops will gather insights on user requirements, governance, ethics, and operational considerations that will shape the development of a trustworthy and responsible digital twin ecosystem.
In our second session (April 23), we focused on Data Request and Access Scenarios, diving into how access is managed, where challenges arise, and what users really need.

๐๐ณ. ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ฌ๐ช ๐๐ข๐ฎ๐ข๐ฏ ๐, ๐๐ฉ.๐.: presents the European Virtual Human Twins initiative. He leads policy, regulatory science, and stakeholder engagement at VPH โ The Society for In Silico Medicine, with a focus on transforming data into actionable knowledge through advanced computational models and the application of digital twins in healthcare. His recent work includes contributions to the EU Health Policy Thematic Network on the adoption of AI and Virtual Human Twins, building on the European roadmap for Digital Twins. He holds a Ph.D. from KU Leuven and an M.S. from RWTH Aachen in computer vision and biomedical engineering, and his academic research includes work on animal models of neurodegeneration.
๐๐ณ. ๐๐ฎ๐ข๐ณ๐บ๐ญ๐ญ๐ช๐ด ๐๐ข๐ฐ๐ถ๐ป๐ข๐ช๐ฐ๐ถ: contributed her expertise to the discussion on digital twins and advanced research infrastructures. She is an Electrical and Computer Engineer and served as a Scientific Associate at the Athena Research Center, where her work focused on Research Infrastructures, Digital Twins, and Emotion AI, with extensive experience in European and national R&D projects. She led the technical team of the EBRAINS Research Infrastructure and played a key role in its integration with the Virtual Brain Twin project, supporting the development of advanced digital neuroscience platforms. She has also contributed to major European initiatives, including the EDITH CSA and the Human Brain Project, advancing innovation in digital platforms for neuroscience research.
๐๐ณ. ๐๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ด ๐๐ช๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐ด: contributed his expertise to the workshop discussion. He is Deputy Head of Research and Publication Support at the Cologne University and City Library, University of Cologne, where he has led initiatives in information science and research data management. Since 2014, he has been involved in developing RDM infrastructure, training, and open science practices, and has served as a Co-Principal Investigator in NFDI4Health. He is also active in national and European research networks, promoting FAIR data practices through training, publications, and policy engagement.
This session introduces the DTRIP4H project and the Decentralised Digital Twin Environment (DDTE) that the project aims to create. It also offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of a unified approach to data sharing, ensuring that your RIโs operational and policy perspectives are represented. By participating, you can help shape solutions that align with your infrastructureโs needs and priorities, while also gaining insights into best practices from other RIs.
๐๐๐ฒ ๐๐๐ค๐๐๐ฐ๐๐ฒ๐ฌ:
- Discovery Before Access: Ensure datasets, models, and assets are visible and understandable before enabling standardized access.
- Federated Yet Unified: A federated backend can support a seamless, unified user experience.
- Centralize vs. Federate: Centralize standards and core processes; federate innovation and local autonomy.
- Sensitive Data First: Prioritize distributed analysis and secure environments over data transfers.
- Metadata Matters: Use domain-specific yet interoperable metadata (e.g., OpenMINDS).
- Operational Governance: Governance must be actively implemented through roles, processes, and oversight - not just defined.
- Data Stewards: Essential for adoption and ongoing operation.
- Sustainability by Design: Plan early for integration with public infrastructure, national nodes, and industry.
This workshop is the second of a series of stakeholder-focused co-creation sessions designed to ensure that the DDTE for health is developed in alignment with real-world stakeholder expectations, operational needs, and governance requirements.
