DTRIP4H Supports a New Air Quality Monitoring Network in Brno
Year-long air quality assessment using a new sensor network (35 locations) will contribute to the creation of a digital twin of Brno
Environmental epidemiologist Ondřej Mikeš (our partner from RECETOX, belonging to the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic) is building on previous successful studies and launching a new round of air pollution measurements. Data from a year-long monitoring campaign across 35 sites in Brno will help create a digital twin of the city.
Over the past two weeks, Ondřej Mikeš, together with his students Simona Šatková and Jakub Dvořáček, has been installing new sensors at 35 locations in Brno to supplement existing reference monitoring stations. These sensors, capable of distinguishing four size fractions of particulate matter, will continuously measure air pollutant concentrations over the coming year.
The specific sites where researchers installed the devices were selected based on an analysis of the city's transportation, urban planning, and population characteristics, in consultation with the Department of the Environment of the Brno City Hall and Technické sítě Brno. The installation of the sensors began on July 23.

The project will also serve as a pilot for the practical use of data in planning a healthier urban environment. In collaboration with other entities (BUT Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Economics and Administration, Department of Transport, City Architect's Office), researchers from RECETOX also intend to use this data for specific analysis of air quality around certain schools in Brno and evaluate possible measures to improve local conditions.
A key aspect of Ondřej Mikeš's work is the science-to-policy and science-to-citizens approach – that is, the transfer of scientific knowledge to local government representatives, policymakers, and the general public. These measurements thus represent another step in RECETOX’s Brno Living Lab project, a living laboratory where the integration of data, new technologies, various stakeholder groups, and citizen science contributes to a cleaner and healthier environment for everyone.
